A Weekend Well Spent at Woodovis Park.

We all love a weekend getaway. After a long week at work, we like nothing more than to pack up the car and have a change of scene. Woodovis Park is a small, safe and peaceful 5 star holiday park only an hour away from us, near Tavistock on the edge of beautiful Dartmoor.

This family run holiday park has a variety of accommodations and pitches to choose from including luxury caravans, glamping pods, a cottage and touring/camping pitches. The fabulous facilities on site include an indoor swimming pool, kids play area (with giant red tractor), table tennis and pétanque pitch.

We arrived early on Friday evening just as Mark, the Hog Roast man was setting up his pop up kitchen and were greeted by the lovely Andy.  We were so impressed with how friendly all the staff in the park were and how much they all appeared to get joy from their job.  This really added to the family atmosphere that we felt throughout our stay.

our accommodation

We are not the type of family who enjoy busy campsites packed with people and activities and Woodovis provided enough space and privacy for us to feel comfortable.  We stayed in one their Premier Robin luxury caravans which was modern and surprisingly spacious!  I say surprisingly, mainly because I haven't stayed in a caravan for a long time (if ever) and with my experience in mind I had come to the conclusion that caravans were generally old and dated.  The Premier Robin was so clean and fresh, I felt like we were the first people to use it.  We were greeted with Cornish shortbread and tea and I had a feeling that we were in for a lovely weekend.

After a cosy night in our new abode, we woke to the smell of freshly baked pastries.  Probably one of my highlights of our stay was picking up fresh croissants and pain au chocolat from the pastry oven in the shop in the morning.  They are made to order and absolutely heavenly!

With our tummies full and satisfied, we hit the swimming pool (we did NOT follow the 45 minute rule).  The swimming pool is solar heated but was surprisingly warm. There was a jacuzzi and sauna and some small changing rooms.  By far the best facility of its kind that I have seen in a campsite before.  If anyone does stay here however, Jonah did devastatingly love Mr Dolphin in the pool somewhere, so please keep an eye out for him!

We were all tired out after our time in the pool as the boys splashed for over an hour pretty much uninterrupted by anyone else.  Also, because Jonah had swum a width of the pool, Woodovis awarded him with a certificate which he paraded proudly back up the path.  With the weather not fantastic,  we were more than happy spending time in the caravan after lunch and relaxing in the seating area, while Winter had his own little quiet time watching Moana in the double bedroom.

playtime

Once we were fully refreshed, we headed back out to explore and discovered the children's play area.  This red tractor has to be the highlight for many children who holiday at Woodovis, as it was for Jonah.

The area is big and open with lots of things to keep little ones entertained.  The boys particularly enjoyed running in and out of the wendy house and Winter who is now fully finding his feet made it his mission to climb those wooden steps about 100 times!

cycling with tamar trails

IMG_0303.JPG

As if we hadn't done enough for one day, we were invited to hire bikes with Tamar Trails for the afternoon and enjoy cycling one of their family friendly trails.

Based only a mile or two away from Woodovis, this is a great place to go to on a family adventure.  At Tamar Trails, there are are lots of activities on offer in addition to cycling.  You can tree surf, canoe, walk, enjoy some archery, or even just grab a slice of cake at the cafe.  We were hoping to go canoeing too, but unfortunately the weather got in the way.  We're hoping to go later on in the summer, so we'll let oyu know how we get on then!

I'm not particularly active and was a little nervous that even the family trail would be beyond my cycling capabilities but I couldn't have been more wrong.  We were greeted by incredibly friendly and encouraging staff who informed us of the best route for us as a family, and got our bikes and equipment together quickly.  If you have your own bikes, you are welcome to come along and use the trails or if you don;t fancy cycling, the walk is just as lovely (and a little less sweaty!)

I actually loved it.  The freedom being in the forest and going at our own pace (as Chris soon realised that towing two small children  what slightly more strenuous than anticipated!) was truly a memorable experience, and one that we will deinitely be doing again.

quality family time

After a (very) short nap in the car back to the park, and the appearance of Mr Sunshine (yey!) we went to enjoy even more of what Woodovis had to offer.  We had a friend come and visit for the afternoon and evening and we enjoyed an hour playing boules (which we hired from the shop) and a game or two of table tennis!

One of the things that makes a weekend away so important and special for us is that we are away from the routine of home; away from the constant tidying and washing and other commitments which in actually fact take you away from quality time that you might hope for from a weekend.  We find that removing ourselves from that, we spend so much more time together, we are more relaxed with each other and the boys have a great time in the process.

Woodovis provided us with a little haven for a couple of days, where we could just be a family, enjoying each others' company and just being.  The pace of life was such a treat and the staff made us feel so welcome.  It was a home away from home, without all the pressures of everyday life.

We said goodbye on Sunday afternoon after a little wander to the bug hotel and to see the other accommodations.  The glamping pods look great if you fancy something a little bit different.  If you fancy something a little bit different in fact, Woodovis is a great place to stay.  It's different to other family parks because it is so peaceful and calm.  There could be many more pitches and caravans crammed in, but the intention at Woodovis is that there is a feeling of spaciousness and privacy.  We absolutely loved our stay and couldn't recommend it highly enough.  We will definitely be back if they'll have us!

We were invited to stay at Woodovis Park in exchange for an honest review. As always, all opinions are our own.
