A Perfect Getaway with Cornish Gems
I love a bit of luxury… I’m not really someone who embraces camping or the great outdoors (and I don’t think I’m alone in that!) I like creature comforts and when I am on holiday, I like to be surrounded by good quality furnishings, a great view and ALWAYS a fancy shower or bath!
Cornish Gems specialise in providing the perks of a boutique hotel yet the freedom of luxury self-catering. We chose to stay at The Wolery near Wadebridge as our destination, but it was a really difficult choice because all of the properties on the website looked so inviting!
The Wolery is set about ½ a mile back from the main road, nestled among Cornish fields. When you drive up the dirt track before reaching the cottage, there is a lovely grassed area with a pond and a small Cob Barn which accommodates 2 people, where as The Wolery accommodates 4.
We arrived late at night on a Friday and parked in the wooden covered garage area and waiting for us was a wind up torch to help us find our way home. The path was lit up with little lights and although it was dark, it was so inviting. The cottage itself consisted of a central living/kitchen/dining area which lead to an en-suite bedroom on each side. Under floor heating made for a warm welcome, as did the basket full of local goodies and a bottle of bubbly in the fridge. Our first impression was that of being treated to something really special.
The quality of fittings and furnishing was way above what we are used to; the kitchen was well designed to be tucked away but high quality, and stocked with good quality crockery and utensils and the space felt really well designed for quite a modest cottage. The boys (Chris included) appreciated the modern TVs in each room which had Netflix integrated into them, so we could just sign in to pick up our programmes, and I enjoyed spending more than an hour or two in the humungous roll top bath attached to our room. Bedroom number two had a large walk-in shower which was great to have the option of each. In the bedrooms, the beds were adorned with super soft sheets and pillows and throws, where Jonah and I loved spending a gorgeous lazy Saturday morning while Daddy cooked us breakfast and Winter burned around from one end of the cottage to the other.
To be honest, we loved the place so much that we didn’t really leave much during the weekend. We briefly visited Polzeath for lunch on Saturday, and there are so many great places nearby to visit, but we were enjoying the cosiness of The Wolery so much that we were keen to get back!
Now to mention the real star attraction of this beautiful little getaway: The Dutch Bath. A Dutch Bath is like a Hot Tub but is fuelled but fire…. (I hope I get this right… Chris explained it to me, so let’s hope I was listening!) Basically, you stoke a fire which heats metal pipes that are wrapped around the tub and the water circulates and heats up. We had a friend come to visit us while we were there and Chris and him really enjoyed the challenge of getting this going! It took a few hours to get the water to an agreeable temperature but when it was done, it was heavenly! Because The Wolery is nestled away amongst trees and fields, you can quite happily pop out in your swimsuit to enjoy the bath in complete privacy. Once all the adults had a go and the water cooled, Jonah made it into his own little swimming pool, paddling around and around until bedtime (which gave us a bit of down time too!).
On the morning of our departure, Jonah and I did a little exploring around the grounds of the cottage. We visited the pond surrounded by daffodils which we picked our way around to sit on a bench and enjoy the view.
The Cornish Gems website shows off luxurious properties in beautiful locations. The reality is just as it says. We were so impressed with how lovely everything was; the attention to detail and cleanliness were beyond our expectations. Sometimes getting away means escaping your every-day surroundings and Cornish Gems are able to provide a special place to enjoy a family holiday, a romantic getaway, or time with friends. If you would like to know more about The Wolery, or any other properties from Cornish Gems, please visit their website here.
We spent a complimentary weekend at The Wolery in exchange for an honest review of Cornish Gems. As always, all opinions are my own.
